Credit Crunch - Outsourcing for Finance & IT Sectors

 The collapse of Northern Rock, HBOS and now Bradford and Bingley spells bad news for banking and IT sectors, but the credit crunch does present new opportunities for outsourcing, as experts predict outsourcing in the banking and IT sectors is to increase during these times of financial uncertainty.

41 per cent of financial services managers questioned in a survey conducted by the Management Consultancies Association (MCA) and the British Bankers’ Association (BBA), expect to increase outsourcing because of the credit crunch.

The survey found that 90 per cent of the companies had already outsourced parts of their business, but only 54 per cent of the managers thought their organisation knew how to get good value from out sourcing.

89 per cent of those interviewed believe that there hasn’t been a significant loss of jobs as a result of outsourcing, and 58 per cent believe that out sourcing has made their businesses more competitive.

Connect, an IT support company, have revealed figures which show that IT outsourcing in particular, is increasing as a direct result of the credit crunch.

Mark MacGregor, Chief Executive of Connect said that they have experienced a 75% rise in IT support enquiries, mainly from sectors worst-hit by the credit crunch, such as Financial Services.

The trend is most prominent in middle sized companies employing between 50 and 500 people, where the costs of running their own internal IT department is seen as an unnecessary overhead.

However, it is predicted that hardware and software vendors will suffer as a result of the credit crunch, as companies hold back on hardware and software upgrades, such as dualcore PCs or updating operating systems to Windows Vista, in order to decrease immediate IT expense.

Financial concerns are expected to drive businesses away from licensed-software deals offered by companies like Microsoft and from running their own in-house IT support teams.

A move towards online software is expected, and a move towards open-source software which can be tailored to a companies’ needs without infringing on copyright regulations.

The credit crunch is predicted to produce a stream of new and renegotiated IT outsourcing deals as companies look to make extra savings on existing contracts. Outsourcers can expect tough demands from banks, but can also expect longer contracts because of such changes.

We can expect the credit crunch to erode IT jobs from high cost areas such as London and New York, to lower cost sites in the East such as Delhi, or smaller areas in the West such as Bristol or Bournemouth.

The worst hit is likely to be contract workers, recent research indicates that the long-term jobless rate among IT contractors has risen from 4.4 percent, at the end of 2007, to 5.5 percent in March 2008. Fears over job security among contract workers are growing.

Despite a predicted fall in It spending, the Economist Intelligence Unit suggest that the drop in IT spending will be below the general spending decline. It is argued that the It industry is diverse enough to weather the storm.

As companies shut offices and try to reduce overheads, more businesses are expect to adopt remote-working models. The government is currently having a consultation about new flexible working legislation due at the end of the year.

 Today’s real estate professionals face challenges that the industry hasn’t seen in years, perhaps in the entire history of selling real estate. New housing starts are down as builders struggle with their own issues of rising costs, and a lack of interested or capable buyers. Homeowners, flush with cash from the sale of overpriced homes a few years back, bought houses that they really couldn’t afford using variable rate mortgages. These mortgages, of course, were issued when interest rates were low. As the rates began to rise, mortgage payments became untenable and these expensive homes were put on the market. As the law of supply and demand dictates, the glut of homes on the market drove prices down drastically, forcing homeowners to sell at less than what they paid, and in some cases, less than what they owed.

Compounding all of this of course is the meltdown of the sub-prime mortgage market. Greedy lenders, in their pursuit of massive financial gain, granted loans to people who really didn’t qualify for them. As these people began to default on their loans, the lending institutions were in turn forced to default on their own obligations. The result - today’s economic morass that is being called the worst global calamity since the Great Depression, if not in the entire history of mankind.

In short, it’s not a good time to be selling real estate. So what’s a real estate professional to do? How do you go about finding success in a downturned market? The short answer is easy - sell something else.

Increasingly, people who make their living selling real estate are seeking alternative careers. In some cases, they seek to supplement their declining incomes as they wait for the market to come back. Others, perhaps the more pragmatic, are moving on altogether. Real estate training notwithstanding, these people realize that they are in fact sales professionals, and that there has to be a better way. When you have a product to sell online, there are many different tactics you can use to help get customers. One great way is through Joint Venturing. A Joint Venture (or again, simply a JV) is when you partner with a person to help sell your product(s). While it is a great idea, it can sometimes be hard to find JVs. So here are some great ideas on how to find them.

The way you go about trying to find JVs actually depends on how competitive your niche is. If you are in a niche that is saturated (such as the Internet Marketing niche) then you will have to go about things a little differently. However, if you are in another niche that is much less competitive then finding JVs should not be too difficult.

For the less competitive niches, all you really have to do is ask people if they would like to JV with you. However, you have to ask the right way. The correct approach to asking a JV can be the difference between a 10,000 dollar launch or a 10.00 launch.

So you can do a Google search on your niche. Then write down the sites that come-up. Next try to find out a name for each site so that you can address each email personally. Then email the person who runs the site.

Introduce yourself and then tell them something you like about their site. Explain why you found it interesting and that you are interested in learning more. Here is the MOST critical point in seeking a JV. Ask them if there is something you can do to help the person out. Whether it is with graphics, writing, whatever you can do provide it shows good faith. Finally, if you have done the other things properly you will be able to tell them a little bit about your product and ask them if they would like to hear more about a Joint Venture with you.

That is how to get JVs in niches that are not too competitive. However, you need to take a slightly different approach on highly competitive niches.

In highly competitive niches you need to make yourself stand out from everyone else. There are hundreds of people who are looking for JVs in some of the most popular niches. So to stand out you want to approach potential JV partners and ask if you can do something for them. Whatever you might be good at, offer to help them with something that you are good at (creating a script, writing a blog, etc.).

Then once you do something for them, they will feel like they should so something in return. This is called the theory of reciprocity. What they may decide is something in return just might be a JV with you. Or, you might just develop a long-term relationship with a few people that will pay dividends for you far into the future (beyond just one Joint Venture).

Gathering JVs can be a difficult process. It really depends on whether the niche is popular or not. For non-competitive niches all you really have to do is ask for people but for competitive niches you have to make sure you stand out to people who you want to JV with you. These partnerships are a critical component of being successful with your online business.
